Description: Because they are so fragile it is rare to find these paper boxes intact. These were meant to resemble French paper mache boxes that were popular in the early 1800s. The Japanese copied French boxes and marketed them heavily in the States during the early 1900s. The photo that is laminated on top is "An Old Time Highway" and the canal scene is almost certainly Dutch. The box itself is probably of Dutch/Belgian origin made for export to English-speaking countries. The side wrappers for the box are reminiscent of Japanese wallpapers of the late 19th century. The whole beautiful piece is in great condition. There is a small chip right below the latch and this is simply from years of someone opening and closing it. The top laminate does have a few cracks in the upper left corner but this does not in any way detract from the beauty of this rare piece. It is lined inside with pink cotton fabric and has a diamond shaped mirror in the lid. The interior is in excellent condition with no rips or tears but only some minor soiling from over the years. The whole box is structurally sound and the hinges are nice and tight. Measures 6 ½" long by 4 ½" high by 2 ½" high. Such a marvelous piece doesn't come along often.
