Description:
Unframed print is medium folio size is 10" x 14" (25.5 x 35.5 cm) the frame is original to the print but someone chose to remove its varnish. Square nails. MUCH, much nicer than my photos. The blue of the famous Civil War General's tunic is so brilliant, it skewed all other shades.
The print is on stiff mat paper which shows an overall yellowing caused by the wooden backing. The colors show no fading, they are as fresh as the day they were applied, either by hand or by means of a stencil, hard to tell. I'm not a Currier & Ives expert so had to do some research. That leads me to believe that the print is a c1865 COLLOTYPE. Magnification shows the typical pattern of that process. The print is titled "Lieut. Genl. Ulysses S. Grant." with "General in-Chief of the Armies of the United States". Directly under the image is "Published by Currier & Ives & 152 Nassau St., New York. If this is indeed a Collotype it would be an early restrike of the original. According to the tag that came with it when I bought it at an Antiques show in Ontario, Canada, Conningham lists this version as #2315. I was unable to verify it due to a lack of information on the net. There is a similar version of the General on his horse but he is not pointing and there are no soldiers in the background. It seems to me that the print here is an uncommon one. Any information a viewer might have would be welcomed & appreciated. Thank you.
