Description: For sale is a wonderful antique silk on linen sampler; the work is signed Mary Pickering and dated 1799. The sampler reads: July 17, 1779 Mary Pickering is my name New England is my nation Greenland is my dwelling place and Christ is my salvation When I (missing word) dead (missing word) in my grave When I D (remainder is unfinished). The verse has decoration, an alphabet, and numbers above it and two alphabets, one set of numbers, and strawberry vine decoration below it. The colors are mostly off white and greens, both light and dark, and there's a little dark blue. The sampler is in a beautiful frame, probably curly maple. The entire framed piece measures 19 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches and the needlework is 16 by 12 1/4 inches. There are a few age spot stains to the linen, no holes, and one vine between two bottom strawberries with missing thread. There are a few nicks to the frame, small missing pieces in three places, and some wear to the gold inside frame. The piece of paper on the back gives most of the verse on the frame and was on it when I found the sampler. From my research, this may be a sampler wrought by Mary Pickering of Greenland New Hampshire. She was originally from Massachusetts and married John Pickering of Greenland. It is a beautiful and early piece! Shipping will be calculated to the buyer's zip code.
