Description: These silk on silk embroidered maps are exceedingly rare. This MAP OF THE WORLD is dated 1791, signed Hannah Hollings Work (also HH embroidered at the top). Research indicates a Hannah Hollings born about 1780 and marrying Thomas Stead in 1803 at Ludlow, Shropshire. Framed it measures 31 3/4" x 18 1/4". The frame has the appearance of being a Hogarth frame, with the framers label on the back: J. Davey & Sons - 5 South John Street Liverpool. The map illustrates the "Western Hemisphere New World" and the "Eastern Hemisphere Old World" with the hemispheres, continents, longitudinal and latitude lines stitiched in silk. The silk fabric was pre-printed with graphics of Europe, Asia, America and Africa in the corners and a beautiful compass rose. The map is an incredible history lesson of how the world was perceived in the 18th c. - The map might also be referred to as "COOK"S TRACKS". It charts the last voyage of Captain Cook on his ship, The Resolution, tracking routes, locations, dates, as well as where he was killed and when - another worthy history lesson. Condition details to be noted: the only visible separation of the silk is about 3/4" on the bottom of the southern hemishpere/Old World, longitudinal thread lines are visible but broken in areas, overall yellowing of silk. This map needs to be archivally framed. The sale price has taken all these conditions into account. This item would be considered quite rare for the fact that not many actually survive, and survive in a condition where they are still intact. The names of countries at that time, including misspellings are all part of its intrigue and fascination. Details such as Australia(New Holland) and Antarctica not even being continents, Asia being called Chinese Tartary, Independent Tartary, Mexico is called New Spain - the details are fabulous and endless. The orignal wood back of the frame has been removed and replaced with archival acid free mount. The silk map is nailed onto a wood frame structure which has not been removed.
