Description:
The Howard Miller Clock Company was founded in 1926. Originally a division of office furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, the company was spun off in 1937 under the leadership of Herman Miller's son Howard C. Miller. The company is better known today for fine household clocks than for nautical clocks.
This clock is solid lacquered brass, and is in excellent condition. The outside diameter of the bezel is 7.5 inches, and the face diameter is 5.75 inches. It rests on an oiled walnut original stand, which measures 9 inches in width.
Condition, as noted, is excellent. There are about 4 spots of tarnish ( size of the head of a pin) on the case. The face is undamaged. The glass is beveled (look closely at the pictures taken from an angle) and free of scratches. The walnut base is also damage-free.
Howard Miller Clock Company owns the Kieninger Company of Germany, a name well-known for its fine mechanical movements. Although no name is visible on the aft end of the movement, it is most likely by Kieninger.
All in all, this is a lovely clock, running perfectly and striking the proper ship’s bells.
