Description:
HUGE ANTIQUE CARVED WOOD CELTIC CROSS. IRELAND ca.1750 OAK This came from an old estate sale in Co. Kilkenny Ireland and is a mighty spectacular piece. I have never seen anything like it. It's just under 2 1/2 feet tall an exquisitely carved, old and extremely rare antique. It's made from wood, Oak I believe, and it is really dark like an ebony I think it is bog oak THOUGH AM NOT SURE, bog oak dug up today of the same size would be heavier, if it is bog oak I suspect that this has dried out and lightened over the years. It has a really deep patina which is very hard to convey in just 4 pictures. It is a wondrous piece to touch and examine and it stands on a stepped base. It's an impressive piece of museum quality which I'll happily hold on to should an offer not be made for it. T is an Irish tradition of Bog oak carving but especially it was said to be a very profitable method of making money during the great famine years of Queen Victoria's reign. But it seems to me to be older than 150 years so I am giving it a time range of 1720-1850. Offers and requests for additional pics are most welcome. My email address is below. Please see my other items in my inventory for more old carvings.
