Description: Sonie Ames grew up on a farm in Utah. As she wasn’t from a wealthy family, she needed to find a craft that would enable her to support herself. As she was a talented tailor, she began by making her own clothes as well as her friends’ and family’s, which eventually evolved into a successful 27-year career as a designer dressmaker. However, work was tedious and demanding, causing Ames to suffer from fatigue and other illnesses. Upon her doctor’s orders, at the age of fifty, Ames gave up her career to be a porcelain artist. She set out to learn all that she could about the medium and before long she was the one giving the seminars, nationally and internationally. Ames is now known throughout the world as “The Rose Lady”, and has literally reached hundreds of thousands aspiring artists through her classes, her books, her website, and other instructive materials. With her extraordinary talent for painting realistically what she sees from nature, it is no wonder that she has gained such acclaim. Sonie Ames Designs was established in 1964, and while it has undergone some changes over time, it is still a wonderful tribute to Ames’ talent and dedication to the art form she cherished so much. This amazing print, entitled “Jonquils”, from 1973, of Sonie Ames’ work is absolutely gorgeous and evocative of her wonderful style. This lovely bouquet of bright yellow jonquils is cheerful and inviting. The realism with which they are rendered is absolutely stunning, with every detail transcribed and clearly formed. The background is a mixture of light pastel pinks and turquoise, softly melded together to form an ambiguous array of color that is pleasing to the eye. Thus, making the jonquils the dominant feature of the work, slightly off center and bursting with natural beauty as the blooms are shown in different stages of life. The brushwork is lovingly delicate and controlled, for Ames showed an affinity for the subject matter of floras. This piece is double matted with a bottom yellow mat that matches the jonquils brilliantly and a top lush green mat that picks up the greens in the intricate stems and leaves. The unique frame that encases this attractive work of art is an ornate wood frame that has a silvery gold metallic finish, depending upon the light in which it is viewed. This exquisite frame included, the dimensions of this tremendous work of art are 14 5/8” x 17 1/2”. In addition, Ames’ name can be seen in the lower right hand corner of the print. This is an absolutely wonderful example of nature’s splendor combined with Ames’ passion to create a masterpiece, and at such an affordable price.
