Description: UK Price 785 British pounds the pair. Pair of Chinese armchairs, mid to late period of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). These chairs have many earlier Ming Dynasty features e.g. the seat framework and apron. Probably made of 'nan-mu' wood, a variety of cedar and not unlike walnut. They were made to stand either side of a table, facing outwards, for the reception of honored visitors. The carving on their backs is the Chinese symbol for 'good fortune'; they have a graceful sculptural quality.
