Description: Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris by John Parkinson. Aberdeen Press Edition, published in London, 1904. Faithfully reprinted from the edition of 1629. The title of this work is a pun: Park in Suns Terrestrial Paradise. Parkinson was among the earliest great English botanists. He was apothecary to James I, and a charter member of the Society of Apothecaries. He was also botanist to Charles I. The subtitle of this work is "A Garden of all sorts of pleasant flowers which our English air will permit to nurse up". The work was in three sections: the flower garden, the kitchen garden, and the orchard garden. These lovely antique engravings were hand colored at a later date.
