Description:
RARE 19thC KOREAN BUTTERFLY CHEST-ON-CHEST A magnificent and highly decorative 19th century storage chest from Korea of three parts: one chest atop another, with both sitting on a base. The chests can be separated and used as end pieces for a couch or bed; however, the topmost section has upturned side additions, while the bottom section does not. This furniture piece is made of beautifully figured wood, probably persimmon or elmwood, and other exotic woods. The many fittings are of Japanese pewter and the overall motif is butterflies. Each section has two small doors which swing open outwards, and a sliding inner door. There are three small functional drawers at the base, each about 10" wide. The other handles and apparent drawers are merely decorative. This piece was used for storage of fine garments or linens. The dimensions are 60" high by 38.5" wide by 18.5" deep. Condition is excellent for a 19th century piece of furniture such as this one, with only relatively minor blemishes due to age and use. Additional photos are available upon request.
