Description: Barbara Greene’s Artist’s Proof entitled, “Have a Relaxing Holiday” is an absolutely magnificent example of artwork from the Cass Corridor tribes of Detroit in the 1970’s. Greene was an active member of the Cass Corridor group as well as an active member of the Artist Guild of Detroit. As one of the few artists in the area to make a living off of her work she gained much notoriety and praise in the local scene. Her work was exhibited in the Guild’s show “Shoestring Detroit” in 1977 as the tides were changing and there was a departure from conceptualist art and a renewed interest in art with a humanistic approach. “Have a Relaxing Holiday” is a wonderfully energetic composition that draws the eye inside as it slowly unfolds around you to reveal the tangle of elements within it. The proof was hand-watercolored with bold saturations of blues, reds, yellows and greens giving it an utterly fanciful appeal. At first glance it may appear that one could never decipher all that is within it, but upon further inspection the viewer is able to see the incredible detail that Greene took such care to articulate. A cluttered living room is strewn with everything from a piano and spindly Christmas tree, to cats, candles, and a reclined figure. The print is signed, dated and titled by Green and is mounted in a deep green mat to draw out the greens from within, and to anchor the almost dizzying composition to a solid, calming ground. The piece is framed in an understated gold wood frame which highlights the golden tones of the background and brings the overall measurements to 16 ¼”x 12.” This is truly a priceless acquisition for any collector of Cass Corridor work, or for collectors of Detroit artists in general. It would be an exquisite addition to households and galleries alike, and at such an incredible price it would be an absolute shame to let it pass you by.
