Description:
Turned the Pacific Ocean Into an American Pond
WWII U.S. Fighting Ships
The Navy Turns the Tide in the Pacific
The war against Japan was markedly different than the one against Germany. Waged in the vast Pacific Ocean, with battlefields on small islands, it was control of the sea that determined the victor. The National Motor Museum Mint is proud to present our second collection of these sea-going heroes.
U.S.S. Missouri Launched in late January 1944, this Iowa Class battleship was 3 football fields long and weighed 45,000 tons. After fighting heroically at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Missouri became most famous on September 2, 1945 when Japan signed the official surrender documents on her deck.
U.S.S. Intrepid This 27,100 ton Essex Class aircraft carrier saw its first major action during the invasion of the Marshall Islands in January 1944. Despite being torpedoed and attacked 3 times by kamikaze's, the Intrepid survived and is now a Sea-Air-Space museum in New York harbor.
U.S.S. Indianapolis This Portland Class Heavy Cruiser has left a legacy of terror and accusation. On leaving Tinian Island July 30, 1945, after delivering components for the first A-bomb, she was hit by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. The Indianapolis capsized and sunk 12 minutes later, taking 300 of its 1199 man crew to the bottom. Only 316 sailors survived, making this America's worst naval disaster.
U.S.S. Arizona A victim of the Pearl Harbor sneak attack, she was struck by a bomb that detonated her magazine. 1103 of 1400 men aboard were killed. Now our most famous WWII monument, resting on the sea floor at Pearl Harbor.
U.S.S. New JerseyMost famous of the “fearsome foursome” of battleships that chased the Japanese navy back to Tokyo harbor. Recommisioned in the early 1980's and refitted with all the latest weaponry.
U.S.S. Hornet Launched Doolittle's famous raid on Japan which eliminated any thoughts of Japanese invincibility and supremacy. Lead by Lt. Colonel James Doolittle, this raid completely surprised the Japanese who could not conceive a force that large could come from a single ship.
