Description: The name Seth Thomas is a symbol of value and craftsmanship , as a result of the variety of sophisticated styles it has produced since 1813. The longest-established clock maker in the United States (nearly 200 years), Seth Thomas is one of the most well-known and respected brands of clocks in the world.

The Helmsman model ship’s bell clock was produced from about 1960 into the 1980’s. The movements were by Hermle, a German firm well-known for its striking clock movements.

Offered here is a very nice example of a ship’s clock. It runs perfectly, strikes the proper ship’s bells, and is in generally excellent condition. The diameter of the face is 4 inches, the bezel diameter is 5.4 inches, and spoke-to-spoke diameter is 9 inches. It is mounted on an African cherry backboard, with a neat molded edge, suitable for wall hanging.

Demerits: only one. The bezel has a dozen or more flaws in the lacquer, which have allowed tarnish to show up. It is all in one quadrant of the bezel, and visible in the photos. Not a big problem to repair -- remove the lacquer (with lacquer thinner) polish the bezel, and re-lacquer it with a spray can from the hardware store. On the other hand (she wore a glove?) the small amount of tarnish might not be worth confronting.

These are great clocks. I had one on a cruising sailboat in the late 1960’s. It never gave me a moment’s trouble, and kept me company with its soft chime when it was time to splice the main brace. (How’s that for nautical talk??)

If you are in the Florida - Georgia area, there is a good possibility of delivery either free, or at a reduced rate, as we travel in that area frequently. Please don’t hesitate to request additional information or more detailed pictures. Both are readily available. ALSO, please don’t fail to check the other items we are offering. On the left side of this page, under the photo, please click “View Dealer’s Other Items” to scan our offerings of 1775 - 1875 antique American furniture, ship and pond models, other nautical items, rare tools and usually some other good stuff.
