Description:
28 7/8" flattened diamond section blade with deep fuller at the forte marked A.I.S.I. repeated three times each side. Evidently an illiterate workman's attempt to imitate noted blade smith Thomas Ayala's name. Maker's mark after the fuller, each side. Chiseled iron hilt with assymetrical shell guards, each with thick spirally fluted edges and pierced liner plates boldly cut with ovals and openwork stylized foliage. Integral quillon block and guard with forward thick tapered quillon and recurved knuckle guard with loop terminal, all modeled with deep spiral fluting. Inverted pear shaped pommel with stylized foliage at the base and spirally fluted body. Wire wrapped grip. Exceptionally crisp and bright throughout. The hilt elements with lovely contrasting definition. Grip excellent. Blade crisp with light gray surface patina. Dating to the period of Spanish conquest of the Caribbean, Mexico, and what is now the American Southwest, the style, workmanship and decorative motifs strongly suggest a Spanish colonial origin reinforced by its discovery in California many years ago.
