Description:
"SULTANA" - The Sultana was a Mississippi River paddlewheeler destroyed by a boiler explosion on April 27, 1865. It was the greatest maritime disaster in United States history, resulting in the loss of an estimated 1800 lives of the 2,400 passengers on board. Most of the passengers were Civil War Union soldiers just released from Confederate prison camps.
Offered is this gambling device believed to be from that ill-fated steamboat. Seller has 50+ years experience in antiques and artifact identification, and believes this item to be authentic and removed from the vessel prior to that terrible day. The name plaque is ivory and the writing scrimshawed and hand-colored. The embellished pieces on either side are the same. The dice are also ivory. All ivory shows deep patina. The wood is walnut. The wear, construction, color, and screw at the bottom are all correct and consistent with the period. This item is all original, down to the felt pad where the dice land. This item was purchased at an estate sale on the Gulf Coast some 30+ years ago.
