Harry J. Moeller’s print “Turtle Doves” is a charming reminder of the cheerful holiday season and the classic Christmas Carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas. Moeller was a noted painter of wildlife, particularly birds, and many of his work was issued in series of prints, such as this piece. The two skillfully rendered turtle doves sit atop a bed of pinecones, pine needles and powdery snow. They seem to be cooing softly to each other in their wintry nest. The complex pattern of their wings and the minute variations in texture have been executed with meticulous attention to detail. Moeller’s signature can be seen at the lower left corner of the composition and the print is centered nicely on a neutral beige paper. The piece is double matted in deep chocolate with a top mat in a soft cream.
