Description:
A wonderful Victorian sterling silver souvenir spoon, the bowl engraved with an image of the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. The handle is wrapped with wirework before ending with a gold miner’s pan, pickaxe and spade. A few gilt nuggets glisten in the pan.
This spoon was made by Joseph Mayer & Bros. The brothers moved to America from Germany during the Alaska gold rush. Two of the brothers went to Alaska, while the third remained behind in Seattle. The original idea was that the two miners were to send raw gold to their brother in Seattle to be turned into jewelry. Eventually, they decided that they, too, would prefer to live in Seattle, and ended their Alaska adventure. Their logo incorporated the crossed pick and spade which is repeated here as the handle decoration.
With the exception of California scenes, Western scenes in Victorian souvenir flatware is not common.
Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, normal wear to original gilding. Size: 3-13/16” long. Weight: 8.5 grams.
