***EXCERPT: "From time to time books have appeared dealing with the art of fly-tying, the subject matter being largely confined to standard types of flies and nymphs for Trout and Salmon. However, there are a number of excellent fly rod lures other than standard flies on the market today, an adequate description of the making of which, so far as the writer knows, is not contained in any book and has only been touched upon in magazine articles in the briefest manner. As one who derives much enjoyment during winter evenings tying flies and lures of various kinds, as well as in helping others to participate in this pleasant pastime, it is the author’s desire to make this information available to a greater number than has heretofore been possible. Since this modest volume is in the nature of a textbook, it would serve no useful purpose to attempt to include the individual descriptions of every artificial lure on the market, not only because these change from year to year, but a careful analysis of their construction indicates that practically all of the most successful can be grouped into about a dozen types. Thus, by selecting an outstanding example of each and explaining the principles of its construction, virtually the entire field is covered. Most tyers find it a help to have an actual pattern to follow. Wherever possible, the address of shops where these may be purchased are given throughout the text"***
