Description: Lovely little cinnabar egg measures approx. 2.75 inches high X 2 inches in diameter. Carvings are exquisitely rendered in the egg shape. Top is a lovely chrysanthemum that drapes over the cone and the center has a Chinese Happiness glyph. The bottom has a smaller Happiness medallion surrounded by scrollwork. In its display stand the overall measurement is 3.5 inches high. Excellent condition, color is superb for age, no cracks or breaks, or pieces missing.

HISTORY: Cinnabar Lacquerware has been made for thousands of years. Lacquerware is any type of object that is coated with a distillate of the sap from the lac tree, common to China's central and southern regions. The lac tree is tapped much like a maple tree to gain its sap with the resulting gum collected is purified by heating and then made into a lacquer by adding solvent. There is also a Cinnabar tree whose wood is a very soft and easily carved or molded that is used for jewelry and buttons, then is coated with cinnabar lacquer to protect the soft matrix underneath. Cinnabar lacquerware is comprised solely of lacquer or lacquer built on a metal such as brass, or a wooden or bamboo shape. Anywhere from 200 to 500 coats of lacquer are applied, depending upon the size of the piece to be carved. Each layer has to dry before the next is applied and until the desired thickness is achieved before carving or ornamentation can begin; the process can take years. Cinnabar lacquer does not dry like paint, but rather cures as the liquid medium undergoes a process of evaporation, leaving the lacquer to harden as it chemically interacts with humidity in the air. The older the piece the harder the lacquer, therefore more easily damage. Cinnabar should be kept out of sunlight to protect the color. To dust, use a fine natural bristled brush.
